Full Description

Mausoleum for the Johnson family, designed in a Gothic Revival style and constructed of ashlar stone with a pierced balustrade. It was built by Theophilus Fairfax Johnson and was consecrated by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1843. The mausoleum was originally located in Johnson's garden at Holland House (see MLI94272), but was moved following the death of his son (Theophilus Maurice Stephen Johnson) and the sale of Holland House in 1892. It was initially intended that the mausoleum would be moved to the parish churchyard. This proved impractical, however, and it was instead moved to its present location in Spalding Cemetery in 1894. It was agreed at the time that the mausoleum would be used as a mortuary for bodies awaiting burial, and a plaque was adding stating that it was 'For the use of the Poor and in memory of T.M.S. Johnson'. The building was being used as a tool shed for several years during early 21st century, but was recently (2020-1) cleaned out and restored. {1}{2}
