Full Description

Former schoolroom at Till Bridge Lane, opened in 1840. It is built of dark red brick, and features a hipped slate roof. The building was extended to the west at some point, although still consists of a single room. The original building is in Flemish Bond, with the extension in a variation of English Garden Wall Bond. There are 3 windows in the southern street frontage, with slightly arched brick header lintels and stone sills. The extension has a further window in the western end, along with the single entrance, which also fronts on to the pavement due to the diagonal position of the building. The windows are now of modern uPVC throughout. A stone plaque in the south wall says ‘STURTON AND BRANSBY SCHOOL 1840’. The building is now in use as a parish meeting room, although is believed to have been used as a Sunday School for some time, after the opening of another school in the village in 1878 (see PRN 52507). {1}
