Full Description

This barn at Lodge Farm was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in May 2019, prior to its proposed conversion into a residential dwelling. The barn is thought to date to the mid-19th century, although has undergone some 20th century additions and alterations. It is single storey, being constructed of coursed limestone rubble bonded with lime mortar. The height of the roof was raised at some point with a course of handmade bricks, and is now covered with clay pantiles. The southern elevation of the building had 2 doors and two vented windows. An extension had been added to the eastern elevation, which had rough concrete block foundations, and walls originally built to 3/4 height using coursed stone rubble. The height of these walls was later raised with brick, and a monopitched, corrugated metal roof was added. The extension had 2 doors (one on each the north and south elevations), and 2 windows in the eastern wall. Another extension was added to the northern elevation of the original barn. This was also built out of coursed rubble, although the eastern elevation had been repaired with concrete breezeblocks, and it had a monopitched corrugated metal roof. The western elevation had been covered by a modern barn. The interior of the original barn has two rooms. In the gable between these rooms is a pitching door that suggests there may have been a upper floor for feed storage, but no other evidence was visible. There is 1 room in the eastern extension, and 2 rooms in the northern extension. The barn was probably originally a field barn, used for crop storage or for livestock shelter. It was later converted to stables for horses. {1}{2}
