Full Description
A Boulton Paul Defiant fighter aircraft crashed on land at Nocton Fen, on the 4th of May 1941. The aircraft was designated N3333 from 255 Squadron, based at RAF Kirton in Lindsey. It was taking part in a night patrol, when it encountered enemy aircraft and was shot down at 4000ft. Both the pilot and the gunner managed to bail out to safety at 1500ft, before the aircraft crashed in open farm land. The crash site was confirmed in late 2017, after a metal detecting survey revealed a concentration of magnetic anomalies in this location. {1}{2}
A subsequent excavation of the crash site was conducted in July 2018. Fragments of the aircraft wreckage were identified and recovered, including large pieces of the fabric structure, remains of the engine, tyres and propeller assembly unit, amongst other fragments. {3}
