Full Description
Outbuildings to the south of the Stable Courtyard at Gunby Hall. The outbuildings were built along the south-western boundary wall of the courtyard, and consist of a single storey brick range of 5 rooms with a mono pitched pantile roof. It was built in 2 phases: the 3 southern rooms were constructed in 1735-1736, and the 2 northern rooms were built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The bricks used to construct the building are handmade using local fabric. The western elevation is laid is the boundary wall, and are laid in Stretcher bond. The rest of the elevations are laid in Flemish bond. The first phase of the building consists of two equally sized room on either side of the a narrow room. The two larger rooms each have a round window and a single wooden door, and the narrow room has a single wooden door in the eastern elevation. The next room was built off the northern elevation of the southern buildings, and it repects the earlier exterior design of a single window and single wooden door. The fifth room was built to the north, and is a rectangular room accessed through a door in the northern elevation with a round window in the eastern elevation. All the rooms have brick floors. The southern-most room was adapted in the 20th century as a fuel store and contains two large metal diesel tanks (the supply for the Robey engine in the sawmill). Part of the change of use involved blocking the east window with brick, and building a low wall across the doorway to limit access and contain spills. The window in the third room has also been blocked with bricks. The fourth room may have functioned as a kennel, as there are a series of timbers built into the western wall that could have been used to secure stalls for animal pens and shelving. The fifth, and northernmost room was a purpose built larder. It has 5 storage racks for hanging game birds, and a large window was inserted into the boundary wall on the western elevation. {1}
