Full Description

The western range of the main farm building complex at Hall Farm was recorded as part of a programme of historic building recording that took place in November 2017, prior to the building's conversion to residential use. The range is built out of coursed limestone, with dressed stone quoins and detailing around the door and window openings. It has a pitched, timber-framed roof, covered with slates. There are 4 divisions within the building, primarily for the sheltering of cattle and horses. The northern most section of the range is a cattle shelter, which is open to the northern yard on the eastern elevation and has a manger, with a limestone rubble base, running the length of the western wall. The next area to the south of the shelter is a probable riding stable. This faces into the northern yard, and has opposing single doors in the eastern and western elevations. There is also a window or ventilation opening in the eastern elevation. A manger runs along the western wall, with an arched brick base. The next room to the south is another stable, which may have previously been used as a harness and fodder storage area. It faces into the southern yard, and has two stalls with a manger, built on wooden uprights, along the western wall. These are likely later additions. The eastern elevation has a single door and a window opening, but has been substantially rebuilt, and the interior wall is constructed using concrete breezeblocks. The final room, at the southern end of the range, is the main stable block. The eastern elevation has a central, single door, with a window or ventilation opening on either side. The southern elevation has a single door and a round window high in the gable. The interior of the stables has 4 double stalls, with a manger built on arched brick supports, and a hayrack running the length of the western wall. The entire farm complex is thought to date to the mid 19th century. {1}{2}
