Full Description

Former cart shed with hayloft at Grange Farm. The 2 storey building is all that remains of a U-shaped complex of farm buildings, a layout typical of the mid 19th century. It is part of the curtilage listing of the Grade II listed Grange farmhouse (see PRN 56093). This range is built out of red brick, laid in English Garden Wall bond. It has a pitched, gabled roof covered with corrugated cement sheeting. There is a mono-pitched, single storey element on the south-east end, but this is not an extension. The north-east elevation is the main frontage of the building with a sliding door in the mono-pitched section, and two arched doorways on either end of the 2 storey section. The span between the two arches is an open 5 bay cart shed. The first floor of this elevation has 2 windows and 2 pitching holes, which indicate that the upper floor was likely used as a hayloft. The single storey south-east elevation has a doorway, and a bricked up rectangular window that truncates another smaller bricked up window. There is also a small bricked up opening at ground level, which may have allowed poultry to go in and out of the building. The north-west elevation has a single window, and a roof scar that indicates there was formerly a single storey, pitched roof building off this elevation. The south-west elevation is concealed by an adjacent brick building, and a large modern shed. At ground floor level, the building is being used as office and storage space, and the majority of the cart shed area has been divided with modern breezeblocks, and is being used as stable blocks. The upper floor is divided into 2 rooms. The building was recorded in June 2018, prior to its conversion to residential use. {1}{2}
