Full Description

Animal sheds or shelters, located along the north and east sides of the crew yard at Towngate House Farm. The eastern range is mostly built out of coursed limestone with ashlar quoins, and the northern end of the western elevation has been repaired or rebuilt in breeze blocks. It has a pitched roof covered in corrugated steel sheeting, except for the northern end, which is ceramic pantiles. The western elevation has 9 stable doors. The southern elevation has a planked wooden door, with a datestone above the doorway reading 'GTM 1731'. This has most likely been reused during a later repair or extension of the building. The eastern elevation has a single square window at the northern end. The northern elevation is tied into the northern animal shelter, and has a single door. The interior is divided into 10 rooms. 9 of these are animal stalls; the lower portion of the walls were painted black and the upper portion of the walls were painted white. These rooms also have either a wooden or stone feeding trough along the eastern wall. The 10th room is a storage room. The interior also shows evidence that there use to be an upper floor, likely used to store feed for the animals below. For the northern range, only the northern and southern elevations are visible. The northern elevation is built out of coursed limestone, and has 2 blocked doorways (one blocked with stone, the other with brick). The southern elevation is faced with breeze blocks, likely a later repair, and has 11 wooden stable doors. The shelter has a pitched roof; the northern side is covered in corrugated steel sheeting, while the southern side is ceramic pantiles. The interior is divided into 10 rooms, with the same layout as the eastern shelter. These buildings were recorded in January 2009, prior to their conversion to residential dwellings. {1}{2}
