Full Description

Benjamin Adlard Primary School, located off Sandfield Lane in Gainsborough, first opened in August 1930. The school was built by Lindsey County Council to replace Trinity School on Florence Terrace, which was deemed "no longer suitable for modern educational needs." When it opened, the new school was known as Gainsborough Sandsfield Lane Council School, and was a school for junior and senior boys. The name changed in 1932, and the school became known as Gainsborough Benjamin Adlard Council School. From September 1962 senior pupils were no longer admitted, and the remaining year group was transferred to the Gainsborough North Secondary School in 1964. Junior girls were admitted from the Gainsborough South County School in 1964, and the school became Gainsborough Benjamin Adlard County Junior School. In 1993, the school was merged with Gainsborough South County Infant School to form the Gainsborough Benjamin Adlard County Primary School, and has been known by its current name of Benjamin Adlard Primary School since September 1999. {1} The current building was built in the 1950s in a modest classical style, fusing neo-Georgian and neo-vernacular architecture. The building was constructed out of red bricks. {2}{3}{4} The design of the school was inspired by the 'open air' movement which sought to tackle contemporary concerns around child health, particularly in industrial towns like Gainsborough. The school's separate classrooms were arranged side by side between two open verandas with full height doors that could be flung open providing fresh air. Each door had a pair of dormer windows above to allow through ventilation and daylight when the weather did not permit the doors to be opened. Heating in the school was provided by low-pressure hot water pipes beneath the floor, removing the need for dirty coal stoves in each classroom. {5}
