Full Description

Orme Hall, Kirton formerly belonged to Sir John Locton. The estates were sold about 250 years ago in about 1580. The Hall was taken down about 1818. Enquiries ascertained that the only hall remains within living memory were incorporated in a cottage, demolished in about 1963. {1}{2}{3} Finds in the area have included a short cross Henry III (1223-42) penny cut in half. Medieval and post medieval pottery found, has included a tabular spout with modelled face. A 6d of James I, dating to 1621 was found in 1974. {4} Pottery has ranged from Stamford ware to 18th century stoneware, and has included: Bolingbroke ware, Toynton ware, Nottingham wares, Bourne wares and Lincoln wares. A few fragments of imported German stoneware were found, including Westerwald. Window and bottle glass were also found and some 17th century clay pipes. Brick was also found and a silver spoon with acorn terminal. Other coins included a penny of Edward I (type x) and a farthing of James I and a Nuremburg token. A silver spoon was found at TF29923933. {5} A scatter of medieval and some later pottery from the site of Orme Hall. {6}
