Full Description
The complex of former agricultural buildings at Priory Farm was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in January 2016, prior to their proposed renovation and conversion to residential use. The surveyed buildings comprise three attached ranges of late 19th or early 20th century date, being constructed at some point between 1887 and 1907, according to depictions on Ordnance Survey mapping. The structures were built in a single phase, in a U-shaped plan around a central courtyard. All of the ranges are single-storey, being built of brick laid in an English Garden Wall bond, with some ashlar stone dressings to the windows and doorways, and pitched roofs of corrugated metal sheeting. The western and eastern ranges have been divided into cells, with windows and cobbled stone or brick floors to each cell, suggesting they may have been used as stable blocks. 20th century alterations have been made to the northern range, with the blocking of what may likely have been an open-fronted structure with modern breeze blocks, and the replacement of the original flooring with concrete. The former open-front would suggest that this part of the complex originally functioned as a livestock shelter or cart shed. {1}{2}
