Full Description

Early English to Perpendicular, restored in 1851. There was originally a Norman church here of which some fragments were found during the restoration, and are preserved in the vestry. A rude stone figure in the churchyard is said by Stukeley to be of Earl Algar. {1}{2}{3}{4} Parish church with its origins in the late 12th century. Restored in the mid 19th century. For a detailed description of this listed church, see Pevsner and the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}{6} In 1965, Harper reported that the church was in normal use. The rector knew nothing of a figure in the churchyard but two stone recumbent figures are within the church; one of a priest and one of a civilian. {7} Medieval coffin lids are in the churchyard at Algarkirk. One of the lids, located on the south side of the church, has foliated decoration. {8} There is medieval stained glass dating to the 14th-15th centuries in this church. {9} Historic graffiti at this church was recorded in May 2015 by the Lincolnshire Medieval Graffiti Project. The survey identified a number of historic marks, including two masons marks on stones on the inside of the church, and a line of eroded lettering carved on an outside surface. {10}{11} Foundations of the probable original medieval south aisle wall were revealed in September 2015, during a trial trench investigation of the church. The foundations were revealed as irregularly shaped, rough and undressed limestone blocks and rubble, laid on the same alignment as the current wall. The slight foundations of the 19th century rebuild were also exposed, although these continued further to the east than the earlier medieval foundations, suggesting the south aisle was extended at this time. {12}{13}
