Full Description

Former school, now in use as a private childcare centre. L-shaped red brick one and a half storey structure in English Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Blue brick banding and plinth coping. Brick corbels and dentil course at eaves height. Date stone on front gable reading ‘1881’, stone lintel above entranceway reading ‘SCHOOL’. Large sash windows. Small decorative bell tower above gable with aperture for a school bell. One large stack on rear gable. Modern rear wing constructed with machine-cut bricks, in sympathetic style. {1} Holton le Clay Board School was built in 1881. The Board School closed down in 1903 and the school was taken over by the local authority. It closed in the late 20th century. {2} The building is present in the same plan form on the 1887, 1906 and 1951 OS maps of Holton le Clay, and marked as a school on all three. The rear extension appears to have been added in the later 20th or early 21st century. {3}{4}{5}
