Full Description
A shallow circular mound which now (2017) has beech trees on it. The mound appears on the 1889 map, and is not far south of a Neolithic long barrow (see PRN42977). From the top of the mound you can get impressive views of the northern fens. This is possibly the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. The soil surrounding the mound is a slightly different texture to the rest of the field: it is fine sand. This sand is known locally as ‘bluesand' and it can be found when digging quite deep in this area. This is perhaps indicative of a perimeter ditch. The fieldname is 'Sandhills'. {1}{2}
There are, in Lincolnshire, several similar wooded monuments interpreted as round barrows and the proximity of an Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery adds weight to this possibility. There is unlikely to be a significant relationship with the nearby long barrow. The sand could be indicative of ditch excavation but these tree-covered mounds are also favoured by burrowing animals. Also note the nearby mill and road name, Mill Lane. {3}
There is no windmill marked on the site on the 1819 Ordnance Surveyor's drawing, although the 19th century tower mill is marked at its present position to the north (PRN42049). {4}
