Full Description

An amorphous magnetic anomaly was recorded in this location in January 2016, during magnetometry survey of land at Sunnydale Close. The feature was quite diffuse and irregular in shape, and was thought to possibly represent the remains of a former enclosure of some kind. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in January 2016, revealed a large spread of medieval saltworking debris that was thought likely to be responsible for the geophysical anomaly recorded in this area. The debris was comprised of a mixture of burnt and unburnt silt, fuel ash and fragments of briquetage and pottery, forming a mound that was visible as a slight but conspicuous rise in this part of the field. The assemblage of pottery recovered from these layers was largely comprised of sherds of Stamford and South Lincolnshire shelly wares, dating from the 11th to 13th centuries. Two probable cattle rib bones were also recovered from the spread of saltworking debris. {3}{4}
