Full Description
In September 1831 'some persons engaged in leading warp from the river side at East Ferry, near Gainsborough, found about 80 silver coins, all of Queen Elizabeth, and generally in a pretty good state. As they were found near together, it is probable they were lost by some person about that period'. {1}
'Leading warp' involved digging channels to allow water from the tidal river Trent to flood arable fields at high tide. The thin layer of rich silt left when the water drained away served to make the soil more fertile. This was called warping. {2}
