Full Description

A Bristol Beaufighter Mk X fighter aircraft from RAF Coastal Command crashed to the west of Mablethorpe on the 6th of January 1944. The aircraft was designated LZ413 of 254 Squadron, and was based at RAF Donna Nook. It was taking part in a fighter affiliation exercise but stalled at 5000ft and spun into the ground about a quarter of a mile to the west of Mablethorpe Hall. Both crew members were killed in the accident. The crash site was confirmed in early 2017, after a metal detecting survey conducted by the Lincolnshire Aircraft Recovery Group revealed an area of intense magnetic anomalies. {1}{2} A subsequent excavation of the crash site was conducted in August 2017. Small pieces of the aircraft wreckage were identified and recovered, including pieces of the fabric structure, a number of parachute buckles and a fuel gauge, amongst other fragments. It appeared that most of the wreckage had been recovered by the War Ministry, shortly after the crash. {3}{4}
