Full Description
A Roman milestone was recovered in 1838, in this area to the west of Ermine Street. The milestone was made of local Ancaster stone, and was inscribed to Constantius and to his son, Constantine (the Great). It was discovered, apparently not in situ, and with the lower part having been broken off, with a quantity of human bones, Roman pottery, and part of a sawn-off reindeer horn. The milestone was sent to Grantham Museum. {1}{2}
The remains of six or seven human skeletons of probable Roman date were discovered on the eastern side of Ermine Street, when foundations for mill structures to the north of Ancaster were dug in 1864. The skeletons were deposited 'in a regular manner', although no grave goods were recovered in association, making their exact dating uncertain. {3}{4}{5}
A scatter of Roman greyware pottery was found in 1965, during excavations for an electricity substation, located to the west of Ermine Street, and to the north of Ancaster. {6}
The remains of an adult male human skeleton was found in 1975, during construction work in this area. The remains were found at a depth of 1.5m, with the body orientated along an east to west axis. Sherds from a Roman beaker and several hob-nails were found in association with the burial, and further sherds of 4th century colour-coated ware pottery were found nearby. {7}
