Full Description

Site of what is thought to have been a former dovecote at Dovecote Lane, possibly built on or near the site of an earlier dovecote mentioned in a 16th century will. The will also makes reference to a former malt kiln possibly on or near the same site. Although not labelled as a dovecote, the building is clearly marked on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map as a rectangular structure. A photograph of the building, thought to have been taken c.1900, shows the structure as an isolated farm building, attached to the field wall to the north of Dovecote Lane. The photograph is of poor resolution, but seems to show the building as constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with a pitched roof, possibly covered by pantiles. No details of any bird holes or nesting boxes can be discerned but a structure in the centre of the roofline is suggestive of a possible dovecote tower. The building is no longer extant, having been demolished at some point in the first half of the 20th century. The exact date of demolition is uncertain, though is known to be prior to 1949. {1}{2}{3}
