Full Description

Site of Mill Farm, Woodhall Spa. Demolished 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse was detached from the main working complex. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {1} The farmstead was still in use until at least 1975. The U-plan building was a single storey red brick building with a pitched pantile roof, hipped at the corners. It comprised cattle sheds on each 'arm', and a central dairy and milking parlour, which ceased production in the mid-1960s. The milking parlour included a sunken pit. There may also have been a cartshed in the northwest corner with double doors in the north elevation. Nearby to the east was a dutch barn (possibly still extant). The farmhouse was a T-plan two storey building of rendered and whitewashed brick, under a pitched gabled slate roof with two ridge stacks. The lower storey central core of the house is said to have had very thick walls (possibly of stone) and is likely to have been older than the rest of the building. To the north of the farmhouse was a one/one and a half storey red brick outbuilding of unknown use, demolished at some point before 1965. It had a pitched gabled pantile roof and a wide, squat chimney stack on its western gable end. The meadow to the west of the farmhouse was planted with fruit trees. {2} With the exception of the dutch barn, all of the buildings in the farmstead appear to pre-date the survey of the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map in 1888 (published in 1889). By 1999 most of the farmstead's buildings had been demolished, with only the dutch barn remaining extant. {3}{4}
