Fen House, North Carlton. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {1} Fen House Farm was subject to a site visit and brief historical research in 2020, when as assessment of the significance of two cow houses and attached stables within the farm complex was undertaken. The buildings and structures dated to the 19th century, and were constructed of a red brown brick laid in English Garden Wall bond, with half hipped gabled pantile roofs. Cart and shelter shed bays are defined by cast iron posts. Door and window openings comprised soldier brick segmental arches, and all windows and doors are in modern timber, though some retain original strap hinges and pintles. The combination barn at Fen House featured a very large series of shelter shed with broad bays open to the south across much of the extended northern side of the crew yards. The rear wall had been heightened and much of the extended shed had lost its roof. To the north is a large cow house for stalling cattle, as well as use as a dairy, calf houses and/or loose boxes. The western elevation had three high level windows set up into the eaves, likely to provide a degree of natural light to internal areas. The northern elevation had single doorways to the east and west, though only the eastern one has been retained. Windows and doors throughout are modern inserts, though the stable doors located in the southern half retain their strap hinges with lozenge ends. No historical or architectural features of interest were recorded internally. {2}
