Full Description
Two ornamental ponds lie in the gardens to the south of Grimsthorpe Castle. The ponds were the subject of a programme of archaeological recording, conducted in December 2001 after their recent re-discovery. Both ponds are made of bricks, which have been mortared over to provide a waterproof lining. The each have a rectangular shape, with Nowy-headed sides and ends. This design is evident in a number of garden designs dating from the early to mid 18th century, although neither pond is recorded on any historic map editions of the area. This area is, in fact, depicted as woodland until at least the production of the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map, and it is likely that the ponds are of late 19th or early 20th century date. The ponds also appear to have been short-lived, having been infilled by at least 1968. {1}
