Full Description

In 1840, workmen digging foundations for some outbuildings in the Castle moat uncovered a tessellated Roman pavement with rows of small dark stones and small bricks. There were first ten or twelve rows of stone and then six to eight of brick and so on alternately. 'It is not more than a hundred yards from the Roman remains called the Mint-wall'. [This would suggest the site is close to the Castle wall near to the north-east corner of the Castle.] {1}
