Full Description

Former school and schoolmaster’s house, now converted into a village hall and private residence respectively. The schoolmaster’s house is a two storey cross-winged structure of red brick, with decorative courses of buff and black brick, red and buff brick window and door lintels, and cross-shaped black brick diapering, under a pitched gabled slate roof. It has two ridge stacks. The former schoolroom, a single storey brick building under a pitched gabled roof, has been significantly altered in the 20th century, and it is uncertain how much of the original structure remains. The previous adjoining structure to the south of the school, present on both the 1887 and 1906 OS maps of the village, has been demolished and replaced by a prefabricated private residence. {1}{2}{3} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a National School, built in 1845, was attended to by an Elizabeth Fox, schoolmistress. The 1872 Directory states that the school was enlarged in 1865 and 1871, and was attended by 75 children. {4}{5} Rex Russell notes that a £56 grant was given towards a school in Willoughton in 1846. Records in the Lincolnshire Archives state that the school building dates to 1866. Documentation from the Lincolnshire archives suggest that the school moved to new premises in 1929, and preliminary visual assessment of the new building confirms that the structure appears to be congruent with a purpose-built interwar school. It remains open as Willoughton Primary School. {6}{7}{8}
