Full Description

Former school. L-plan form building constructed of coursed limestone, with red brick quoins, under a hipped roof. Two ridge stacks, one on each wing of the building, and one cupola on the northern roof pitch. A bell tower or turret, with bell in situ, sits on the northeast corner of the building and is roofed by another cupola. A red brick porch has been added to the western elevation, and a sympathetic limestone extension has been added to the eastern elevation. {1} White’s 1856 Trade Directory states that the Free School was originally founded in 1719, and rebuilt in 1830 at the cost of £200. {2} The school is present in its current plan on both the 1887 and 1906 Ordnance Survey maps of the village. {3}{4} Records in the Lincolnshire archives note that the school was transferred to the newly formed Waddingham School Board in 1877. It became Waddingham Council School in 1903, and Waddingham County School c.1947. Senior pupils were transferred to the new Kirton Lindsey Senior Council School from 1 April 1940. The building ceased to be used as the main Waddingham County Primary school at some point in the 1960s, whereby the school was transferred to new premises on the same street. However, it was still in use as a school, possibly as a constituent part of the new Waddington County Primary school. It was still in use as a school in 1983, however by 2011 it had gone out of use. It has since been converted for residential use. {5}{6}{7}{8}
