Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow to the north-west of Binbrook, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} Traces of probable ploughed out medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in July 2013, during a magnetometry survey, conducted on land to the north of Kirmond Road (TF 2057 9407). The former cultivation remains were recorded as weak, linear magnetic anomalies, aligned on a roughly east to west axis. A possible headland was identified at the eastern end of the surveyed field, aligned roughly north to south. {2} Subsequent trial trenching was conducted in December 2013, to investigate the geophysical anomalies identified on land to the north of Kirmond Road. The remains of several ditches, consistent with medieval ridge and furrow agriculture, were recorded in the western half of the site, with a fragment of medieval tile being recovered from one of the ditches. The feature at the eastern end of the site, previously interpreted as a possible headland, was revealed to be a former hollow way or erosion channel of likely post-medieval or later date. {3}{4}
