Full Description

Former school, now in use as a village hall. The original building is of red brick construction in English Garden Wall Bond with three bands of yellow brick decoration, two of four courses and one of three courses, under a pitched gabled roof of concrete tiles. The windows are 3 over 3 casements, with flat arch lintels of yellow brick. The original porch, on the east gable end, is constructed of brick in English Garden Wall Bond, with red brick stretchers and yellow brick headers, under a sloped gabled roof. There are 20th century flat roofed red brick additions to the rear of the building. {1} There is no mention of a school in Snitterby in White’s 1856 Trade Directory. White’s 1872 Directory states that the school was constructed as a National School in 1863, at the expense of £160, and was attended at the time by 35 children. {2}{3} The school is present in the same rectangular plan on both the 1887 and 1906 OS maps of Snitterby and is marked as a school on both. {4}{5} Records from the Lincolnshire archives suggest that the school was built in 1862 and was known as Snitterby National School until at least 1903. Senior pupils were transferred to Bishop Norton CE School and Waddingham Council School from May 1916. The school was closed on 29 July 1932, with the children transferred to Waddingham Council School. {6}{7}
