Full Description

The original structure is a gable-ended T-plan of red brick construction, with buff brick window detailing and quoins on the front gable. This gable has a datestone containing a dedication and the date 1851. The building has been modified and enlarged substantially, with 20th century extensions to the front and rear, and a large 21st century disability access ramp dominating the front of the building. {1} A large grant of £100 was received for school building in Scotter and Scotton in 1847. {2} White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire states that the school was built in 1834, and by 1856 is attended by 130 children. He also lists three schoolmasters (Samuel Barker, Thomas Bird and William Bird) and two women (Elizabeth Frankland and a Miss. L. Fyles) whose occupation are listed as 'National School'. Data on the school present in the Lincolnshire Archives also suggests that the school was built in 1834. The school was known as Scotter and Scotton National School in 1903, and subsequently as Scotter and Scotton C of E School. As part of a reorganisation in March 1924, senior pupils from Scotton and other neighbouring villages were admitted to the school. {3}{4} The school is shown in the T-plan form on both the 1887 and the 1906 Ordnance Survey maps of Scotter. {5}{6} The school system in Scotter, Scotton and Northorpe was subject to a major reorganisation in 1932 and the school was closed, though the site was later used as a school again (it is marked as such on the 1948-50 Ordnance Survey map of Scotter) – this may have been the site of the new Scotter Council School. The school became Scotter County School, c.1948. Senior pupils were transported to Gainsborough and other schools from the mid-1950s. The archive for Scotter Council school ends in 1969 and by the time of the 1972 Ordnance Survey map of the village, the building is marked as a village hall. {7}{8}
