Full Description

19th century schoolroom and schoolmaster’s house. Red brick construction in English Bond, with black brick bands, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Parapet gables with concrete tile coping and moulded stone shoulders. Dogtooth dentil course at eaves height. One gable stack and one lateral stack. Windows are replacement modern uPVC casements. A larger modern school building with extra classrooms and office space was constructed to the east of the original school in the late 20th century. {1}{2} The building is present in the same plan form on the 1887, 1906 and 1950 OS maps of Middle Rasen. {3}{4}{5} White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire notes that a charity school was founded in the village by John Wilkinson in 1720 for 8 poor children. The school had two acres of land allotted to it. The 1872 Directory states that the school consisted of a school room and residence for a teacher. It is unclear whether this school was on the same site as the current school. {6}{7} Documents from the Lincolnshire Archives state that the school was built in 1875, replacing a charity school founded by the will of John Wilkinson. The school was administered from 1878 to 1903 as Middle Rasen Board School. It became Middle Rasen Council School in 1903 and Middle Rasen County School or County Primary School, about 1947. Senior pupils were transferred to the new Market Rasen Senior Council School from 1937. The school was known as Middle Rasen County Primary School prior to September 1999. {8}
