Full Description
An impressive five bay one and a half storey red-brick former school in a T-shape cross-wing plan built in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Blue and white polychromatic brick bands. Red brick plinth with blue brick coping. Each bay has a pair of segmental arch window openings with a concrete sill and white brick lintels, except for the central wall dormer bay, which has gothic arched window openings. Both the gables have three gothic arch window openings. The building has a datestone of 1873. The attached schoolmaster's house is constructed with matching architectural and decorative elements. The school is depicted on both the 1887 and the 1906 Ordnance Survey maps in the same plan form. {1}{2}{3}
Rex Russell dates the formation of the local school board to 1873. {4}
Documents from the Lincolnshire Archives state that the school was opened on the 1st January 1873 and was administered until 1903 as Keelby Board School. It became Keelby Council School in 1903, and Keelby County School in 1947. From June 1936, older pupils were transferred to Immingham Senior School. The first phase of new premises was opened in June 1973 and the school appears to have fully moved out of the building by 1999. The building is now used as a library and youth centre. {5}
