Full Description

The school was built by the Dixon family in 1858, and was known as Holton le Moor National School in 1903. New buildings were opened in 1914. Senior children left in June 1938, mostly for the new Senior School Caistor, and the school became a primary school. The school was officially closed on 31 August 2006, but the last children had left at the end of term in July. {1} The original school building is a single storey, four bay red brick construction in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of pantiles. It is present on both the 1906 and the 1887 map of the village. The early 20th century addition to the school is mentioned in Pevsner’s 2nd edition Buildings of England as a ‘Nice, friendly, symmetrical’ building. Constructed in 1913 by Henry Gilbert Gamble, it is a large two storey red brick building under a hipped roof of pantiles with a central protruding gable decorated with shields and rose branches. Both buildings, along with more modern extensions to the latter, are now in use as a bookable events space known as St Luke’s County House. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6} White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire has no information on a school. The 1872 Directory lists a Mrs Mary Broughton as schoolmistress but provides no other information about a school in the parish. {7}{8}
