Full Description

Former schoolroom and schoolmaster’s house. The schoolroom is a one and a half storey building of coursed limestone, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two small cross-wings built in brick flank a modern flat-roofed porch extension on the front elevation. It has one ridge stack. The attached schoolmaster’s house is a two storey building of coursed limestone with yellow brick window surrounds, under a pitched gabled roof of concrete tiles. A datestone above the porch reads 1859. One end stack. The schoolroom is now in use as a village hall and the schoolmaster’s house is a private residence. {1} Both the 1887 and 1905 OS maps show the school in its current plan, without the modern porch extension. {2}{3} White’s 1856 Trade Directory states that the parish had a school, attended at the time by 40 children. White’s 1872 Directory notes that the current school building was constructed in 1859 at a cost of £560, and was attended by 70 children of both sexes. {4}{5} Records from the Lincolnshire Archives state that the school was built in 1859, as a National School. It became a council school around 1911, when it became known as Hemswell and Harpswell Council School, and was known from 1946 as Hemswell and Harpswell County School or Hemswell County School. From 1940 senior children were transferred to the senior school at Kirton. The school was closed on 25th March 1970, with the children transferred to Willoughton County School and Hemswell RAF County School. {6}
