Full Description

Former parish school. The current two storey L-plan structure is constructed of coursed limestone and brick, under a pitched gabled roof of tiles, and represents several phases of building. The original schoolroom likely consisted of a single storey range of coursed limestone, with dark brick window and door surrounds. A dark brick dentil course runs at what would have been eaves height, though a second storey has been added at some point. Appended to the northern end of this range is a two storey coursed limestone range that likely formed the schoolmaster’s house. The second storey windows interrupt the dentil course here, and are set into yellow brick surrounds, suggesting they may have been a later addition. The rear range, a cross-wing at right angles to the house, was once a single storey of coursed limestone but now includes a later red brick second storey. {1} Now known as the 'Old School House'. Records in the Lincolnshire Archives state that the school was built in 1837 and enlarged in 1873, possibly to include the originally single storey rear range. It became Grayingham CE School until at least 1913 and finally, Grayingham Council School. The school was closed on 31st October 1923. {2} The school building is present in its current plan on both the 1887 and 1906 Ordnance Survey maps of the village. {3}{4} White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire states that the school was built in 1838 by the lord of the manor, with £30 a year allocated to the education of poor children. {5}
