Full Description

A former mid 19th century school, originally comprised of three buildings. The southern building, closest to the street frontage, is of yellow brick construction in English Garden Wall Bond, under an M-shape slate roof with a single stack. The gable ends have wooden fascia boards with finials at ridge height. There is a large infilled Gothic window on the western south gable and a narrow gothic window on the eastern. The eastern gable also has a single storey porch with an arched doorway. A long range, under a hipped roof, to the north of this building cannot be seen from the street. A third building sits to the west, originally forming a single gabled range of red brick, but with an early 20th century cross-gable extension to the rear. The buildings are all present on both the 1906 and 1887 OS maps, along with a small range of outbuildings to the north, which appear to have sinced been demolished. {1}{2} White's 1856 Directory of Lincolnshire states that the school was built by William Hutton Esq. in 1851, and a Jane Curry is listed as being the local schoolmistress. Records in the Lincolnshire archives suggest that the school was opened in 1851 as Gate Burton National School and it was closed on the 7th October 1966, with the children transferred to Francis Olive Anderson CE School, Lea. {3}{4}
