Full Description

The crash site of a Short Stirling Mk III four-engined heavy bomber, that crashed during the Second World War, on the 12th April 1944 at 1:25am. The aircraft, 'Auben Fox', designated LJ450 from No.1654 HBCU, RAF Wigsley, was on a long night-navigation and bombing training exercise and was intercepted and shot down by a Messerschmitt Me 410 intruder from 2/KG51 (KG, Kampfgesschwader, was a Luftwaffe organisational unit). Four of the eight crew managed to bail out but the others died in the crash. The aircraft crashed close to Hilltop Farm, Caythorpe. The crash site is covered by a small copse that is maintained as a memorial to the men on this flight. The land owner has erected a memorial plaque on a board in front of the copse, which was unveiled on 7 July 2004. {1}{2}
