Full Description

The complex of former agricultural buildings at Parkside Farm were the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in March 2016, prior to their proposed conversion and renovation. Originally consisting of a single early 19th century farm structure, the complex was enlarged slightly in the mid 19th century, and much more considerably in the 20th century, although much of these later additions had been demolished by the time of the survey. The earliest structure on the site consisted of a north to south aligned, two-storey combination cart shed and probable granary building. Built of brick and limestone rubble, it was very much of the vernacular style for farm buildings of the early 19th century for this locality. Five large, brick-arched openings to the western, ground floor elevation clearly indicate the building's former use as a cart shed. Although almost wholly demolished, the second storey was thought to have been used as a former grain store. This initial complex was enlarged in the mid 19th century with the addition of a second two-storey structure to the south-east of the first. Built of orange, red and occasional russet coloured brick, this second structure was aligned east to west, creating a small complex of L-shaped plan form. Much of the structure had again been demolished prior to the survey, including almost all of the second storey, and its exact former function could not be determined. A range of brick and concrete structures were added to the complex at various points in the 20th century, considerably enlarging its size. Most of these structures had been demolished prior to the survey, however, and only small fragments remained. {1}{2}
