Full Description

The remains of a sub-circular pit was recorded in this location in November 2015, during trial trenching conducted to inform proposed residential development. Three sherds from a large Lincoln Kiln type jar of late 9th to mid 10th century Saxon date was recovered from the upper fill, suggesting a rough date for the feature's creation. A small quantity of animal bone was also recovered, with the assemblage including fragments from both cattle and sheep. The feature was cut into the fill of an Iron Age ditch, however, and the animal bone may be residual. Analysis of an environmental sample, taken from the pit's fill, indicated that it lay within an open, damp grassland area, laying some distance from any potential settlement activity. {1}{2}
