Full Description

Retrieved from the playing field off Julian Bower, Louth, was a high status Cistercian ware potsherd, two pieces of 16th century pottery and possible medieval tile fragments. {1} During trial trenching on the playing field off Julian Bower, Louth, a single sherd of late 13th to 14th century Toynton-type pottery was retrieved from trench 4 during trial trenching. Also found were three abraded fragments of roof tile dating between the 13th and 18th century, two small abraded flakes from handmade bricks of 18th to mid-20th century date and an iron nail of post medieval date from trench 5. All of the finds were recovered from topsoil contexts, rather than stratigraphically secure features, and were thought to derive from manuring scatters. It was thought that at least some of the finds may conceivably have been imported to the site during the 20th century landscaping of this area. {2}{3} Several pieces of undated medieval pottery from the central area of the earthwork platform were retrieved by a local resident after the trial trenching. {4}
