Full Description
A number of linear and discrete magnetic anomalies were recorded in this location in September 2014, during magnetometry survey of land off Louth Road, Wragby. The anomalies were thought to represent the remains of several ditches and pits of an unknown date. {1}
Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in April 2015, confirmed the presence of several ditches on the site, some of which were intercutting. A relatively large assemblage of late Iron Age and possibly early Roman pottery was recovered from the ditches, along with a piece from a fired clay loomweight, and a possible early Roman iron punch or awl. An assemblage of animal bone was also recovered from some of the features, though was too small and fragmentary to indicate much other than the presence of cattle, sheep and horse on the site. Analysis conducted of environmental samples taken from two of the excavated ditches confirmed the likely domestic nature of the site, identifying charred remains of cereal grains and rhizomes, providing evidence for the culitvation of spelt wheat and hulled 6-row barley. The finds and environmental evidence strongly suggest that the site was on the periphery of a late Iron Age rural farmstead, in which a mixed agriculture was practised. Some possible overlap into the Romano-British period may also have occurred. {2}{3}
