Full Description

A late 18th century timber-framed barn with later timber cladding. The majority of the wall and cross frame timbers of the timber framing appear to have survived. It has a pantile roof and brick gable ends. In the interior the central tie beam has an inscription 'HAW' and a date that is probably '1775'. The barn is of five bays and appears to have been used at some time as a threshing barn, the main double doors being in the middle bay on the north-east side of the building. Each bay has a simple but largely complete cross frame comprising a principal tie beam fixed to the wall plate probably by a lap-dovetail joint with bracing between the wall plate and main post and between the main post and tie beam. The bay of the main double doors appears slightly wider and there is no bracing impeding access through these doors whereas there is bracing on the opposite side suggesting that on the west side the barn either had no door or a smaller door. The more southerly main post from which the left-hand main door is hung has snapped and is probably only restrained by the bracing to the back to the principal tie beam. One infill panel on the west side in the bay south of the door bay has split laths similar to mud and stud laths but there is no mud. The cross frame at the northern end of the barn is missing. The simple vertically boarded external timber cladding is later than the timber frame. A number of the roof timbers appear to be of a similar age to the cross and wall frames. The barn is currently (2016) used for storage. {1}
