Full Description
The former agricultural buildings at Town Dam Lane were the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in July 2012, prior to their proposed conversion to residential use. The complex comprises two small, adjoining structures, thought to date to the early 19th century and used as a fodder store and stable. Both structures were built of brick, mostly laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and would have featured gabled roofs of clay pantiles, although these had largely been removed by the time of the survey. A chimney is located at the western corner of the building, in the part thought to have been used as a fodder store. The chimney was not tied into the main walls of the structure, and is thought to represent a later introduction of machinery into the building, to aid in the preparation of fodder for the animals kept in the adjacent stables. The buildings were in a largely ruinous condition at the time of the survey, although some internal features could still be discerned, including the positions of former mangers and the use of bull-nosed bricks around the doorways in the stable part. An open-sided lean-to structure of corrugated iron and asbestos sheeting was added to the north-eastern side of the brick structures at some point in the 20th century. {1}{2}
