Full Description

A former post mill is depicted in this location to the east of Saxilby, on the 1st edition 1" Ordnance Survey map, where it is named as 'Saxelby Mill'. An earlier 1648 estate map of Saxilby also shows a former post mill in this location, suggesting possible 17th century origins for the structure. This earlier map depicts the mill as being on the western side of Mill Lane, however, whilst the OS map shows the mill on the eastern side of Mill Lane, and it is therefore not clear if it is the same structure being depicted by both maps. It could be that the mill was moved a short distance, or that the road was re-aligned alightly, or that these are in fact two different mills. {1}{2}{3} The mill is not depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map, suggesting it went out of use and was demolished at some point prior to the 1880s. It may have possibly been replaced by the tower mill built in 1823 at Saxilby Moor (see MLI96570). {4}
