Full Description
Park and recreation ground at Alford, with the main entrance located off South Street. The park was established in 1926, when the initial land to the north-west of South Street was purchased by the trustees for £250. The park was renamed as the Alford Memorial Recreation Ground soon after the ending of the Second World War, with a memorial to the fallen of that conflict being created at the entrance. This memorial takes the form of a decorative gateway, with two brick pillars supporting a metal archway and gates, and with bronze plaques on each of the brick pillars giving the names of the dead.
The recreation ground was substantially enlarged in 2001, following the donation of land to the north-east of the original parkland. Improvements to the drainage and lighting of the park were made at that time, along with the addition of a junior football pitch, skateboard park and footpaths around the park. A further war memorial, in the form of a large sundial obelisk, was added and dedicated in 2010. This memorial records the names of the Second World War fallen, with an additional commemoration for Pvt. Richard James Sinclair, a soldier who died in October 1972, during service in Northern Ireland. {1}
