Full Description

Caistor war memorial, which stands in Butter Market, at the junction of Market Place and South Street, commemorates the First World War and Second World War dead. The memorial was unveiled in 1920, and is 20ft (6m) high with an octagonal three-stepped base. A plinth supports an octagonal stone shaft surmounted by a simple cross. {1} This memorial takes the form of a well-executed Greek stone cross, standing atop an octagonal shaft with a splayed foot. The shaft rises from an octagonal plinth on a three-stepped base. The height of the lower step of the base rises at the southern side to accommodate the sloping site on which the memorial stands. The memorial was unveiled on 15 August 1920, by Lord Charles Alfred Worsley (the 4th Earl of Yarborough) and was dedicated by Reverend G S Tyack. It commemorates thirty nine members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War, an additional inscription was added to the memorial, to commemorate the thirteen names of the dead from that conflict.
