Full Description

The former blacksmiths cottage and workshop at 321 London Road, Wyberton, was the subject of a building survey, conducted in July 2015, prior to its demolition and proposed redevelopment of the site. The exact date of construction is not known, although the building is depicted on the 1st edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map and likely dates to the 19th century. Also depicted on the map, to the north of the cottage, is an earlier smithy building that was replaced in the mid 1930s by the structure to the immediate south-west (see PRN 14567). The building was constructed to provide accommodation and additional working areas for a blacksmiths business, and comprises a two-storey house with a single-storey L-shaped workshop attached to the east. Both structures are built of red bricks laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and feature roofs of clay pantiles. The buildings interiors have been much altered and largely date to the 1960s, although 1930s fireplaces were present. The blacksmiths was largely operated by the Sharp family, who obtained the business in 1916 and operated until 1985. The business continued in use for a few more years, but closed in the 1990s, and the building was demolished in 2015. {1}{2}
