Full Description

The former blacksmiths shop at 321 London Road, Wyberton, was the subject of a building survey, conducted in July 2015, prior to its demolition and proposed redevelopment of the site. The building was constructed in the mid 1930s, to replace an earlier smithy building on the junction of London Road and Ralphs Lane, that was demolished in 1936 to improve visibility and safety at the junction. The replacement building was a single storey structure, built of red bricks laid in an English Garden Wall bond. The roof was originally of clay pantiles, though the southern half was replaced with a sheet metal roof at some point, designed in imitation of the pantiles. Inside were the remains of two brick built forges, of very similar construction, with large brick chimneys located directly over each. The blacksmiths was largely operated by the Sharp family, who obtained the business in 1916 and operated until 1985. The business continued in use for a few more years, but closed in the 1990s, and the building was demolished in 2015. {1}
