Full Description

An undated boundary bank and a dump of undated kiln waste were identified in June 1995, during archaeological monitoring of the construction of a new access road on land to the east of Scampton House. The boundary bank lay at the eastern edge of the monitored area and was aligned on a roughly north to south axis, roughly parallel with the adjacent modern road. It may be associated with the monastic granges of Scampton, though no dating evidence could be found to support this interpretation. The dump of burnt material and waste ceramic deposits was located a short distance to the west, at the fork of the new access road. Although no in situ kiln structure was identified, the ground on which the waste deposits lay appeared to be scorched, suggesting industrial activity was conducted in the immediate vicinity. This feature may also be associated with the activities of the monastic granges though, again, no dating evidence was recovered. {1}{2}
