Full Description

The Smithy at Snelland is a mid 19th century, single-storey, three-bay purpose-built blacksmiths workshop. A building survey was conducted in March 2011, prior to its proposed renovation. The structure is built of brick laid in a variation of English Garden Wall bond, and features a pitched pantile roof with a dentillated eaves cornice. There are gable stacks to each end, and segmental arched windows to both sides of a central south-eastern opening, now housing 20th century sliding metal-framed doors. There is a small timber extension with a flat felted roof to the rear. The building is thought to have been constructed at some point between 1856 and 1873, when trade directories list the arrival of a blacksmith in Snelland. It is thought to have functioned as a smithy until the 1930s, when the blacksmith business is no longer listed. The building appears to have been used as a store since then, with some possible minor use as a mechanics workshop. {1}
