Full Description

The remains of a former stone building of probable late Saxon date were identified in 1979, during field walking on land off Crown Hill, Ropsley. The remains were exposed during the groundworks for residential development and comprised limestone foundations of one wall and three adjoining areas of disturbed soil. A large assemblage of over 400 sherds of late Saxon pottery was recovered, along with other likely late Saxon finds, including a copper alloy object with zoomorphic design, thought to have formed part of a purse fitting, a probable iron key, iron nails, slag and animal bone fragments. {1}
