Full Description

A considerable assemblage of Roman material was identified in this area in 1979, during field walking on land to the south of Hurn Wood, Ropsley and Humby. The material was recovered from a patch of relatively sandy soil surrounded by clays, and included over 1500 sherds of pottery, including some very fine red wares, and a large quantity of tile and industrial-type fired clay. The ceramic assemblage included a large number of poorly made and overfired coarse wares and tegulae, very likely representing wasters from industrial activity, and would suggest that a Roman tile and pottery kiln was in the immediate vicinity. 9 iron nails, 3 glass fragments and 24 quern pieces were also recovered from this area. {1}
